We Tried Pure Barre

Bankers at the Barre

What happens when you take bankers out of the bank? After Jenny and Stephanie tried CycleFit, we challenged our team to come up with other #goLocal adventures. Next up: Pure Barre Frederick.

Pure Barre is a workout method that uses small, focused movements to create big change. Each class incorporates targeted strength moves, cardio, and flexibility. The workout also includes time at the ballet barre as well as moves with resistance bands, balls, and weights.

Peyton Kidwell, co-owner of the Frederick location, hosted a private class for team FCB, but she warned us she was not going to take it easy on us just because it was our first time.

Payton Kidwell

“I think people should take one of our classic classes before coming to a foundations class. That way they know what to expect before they go back to learn the basics. Otherwise people get comfortable in foundations and then have a bit of a shock when they come to the regular classes.”

-Peyton Kidwell, Co-Owner Pure Barre Frederick

Peyton also told us it’s best to take a few classes before deciding if Pure Barre is the right fit for you. That’s because there are different move progressions, different instructors, and you need time to get used to the style of movements. Peyton has been doing Pure Barre for more than 6 years and recently became a co-owner of the Frederick location with her mom Angie.

We Tried Pure Barre...Here’s What Happened

Team FCB at Pure Barre

How did you hear about Pure Barre?

Nicole Mooney

Nicole: I started doing barre in Ashburn, VA. and I have been taking classes for over two years. I recommended that Team FCB take a class as part of our #goLocal series.

What was the experience like?

Stephanie Fitch

Stephanie: After dropping your shoes and bags in cubbies you make your way into the studio room for the class. Our class included a warm up, mat work, moves at the barre, and a core component before stretching at the end. It’s fast-paced, challenging, and you’ll definitely be shaking and sweating by the end. Make sure you bring some water, wear clothes you can move and bend in, and wear socks – because there are no shoes in the studio.

Did anything surprise you?

Kristie Stottlemyer

Kristie: It was more challenging than I anticipated and I didn’t realize that every muscle group would be targeted during the session. I actually liked that when one area became fatigued, we would move on to the next…You really do get a great overall workout!

Stephanie Fitch

Stephanie: I was surprised by how much mat work there was. I was expecting to spend the whole time at the barre.

Yvonne Reeder

Yvonne: That the process was interwoven with the beat of the music, unfortunately for me I had a hard time following the process, breathing, and movement because I wanted to go at a faster pace, especially if the music was more dance music – then I wanted to just dance.

What was your favorite part?

Kristie Stottlemyer

Kristie: Stretching at the end of the session :)

Nicole Mooney

Nicole: No class is the same, and it is always challenging

How did you feel after class?

Kristie Stottlemyer

Kristie: I felt accomplished even though I couldn’t keep up with all of the exercises. I wasn’t sore right after the session but the next day my muscles felt a bit fatigued and we were told this is to be expected.

Stephanie Fitch

Stephanie: The class was more challenging than I was expecting and a great reminder that fitness includes lots of different modalities like flexibility. I had to modify a lot more of the moves than I was expecting, but I definitely still felt the workout the next day.

Tammie Jones

Tammie: I initially felt really great after the lesson, next day though I will admit I was really sore, which convinced me that the small movements we did within the lesson really did work my muscles.

Yvonne Reeder

Yvonne: Sore, definitely worked muscles/areas that hadn’t been used in a while, even 2 days later.

What advice do you have for someone considering Pure Barre?

Kristie Stottlemyer

Kristie: Understand that it’s ok to not know all of the movements or be able to do them perfectly in the beginning. Just focus on your own personal best and goal setting

Nicole Mooney

Nicole: Give it a try and go a few times before really deciding if it’s for you!

Who would you recommend Pure Barre to?

Kristie Stottlemyer

Kristie: Since it is low impact, I would recommend Barre to anyone looking to try an overall body workout.

Stephanie Fitch

Stephanie: If you like pilates, you should definitely consider barre, it’s great if you’re looking for a focused workout. I imagine when you get the flow of things you can turn your brain off and concentrate on each movement.

Would you go back?

Kristie Stottlemyer

Kristie: Yes

Nicole Mooney

Nicole: It is the first workout I have actually stuck with. I have full intention of sticking with barre for a very long time. I have watched my transformation over the years and am so proud of how far I have come. I thought holding a 90-second plank was almost impossible, but after time you grow stronger and the motions become more natural. Watching others in class is amazing as well. I have developed long-lasting relationships even outside the BARRE.

Stephanie Fitch

Stephanie: Maybe - I'd definitely like to improve my flexibility

Tammie Jones

Tammie: Yes! I would definitely try it again.

Yvonne Reeder

Yvonne: I have done of a variety of exercising opportunities, Zumba, Gym, but yes I would love to try it again, now that I know what to expect.
